Gijsbert von Abcoude gab dem Dorf Wijk in 1300 die Stadtrechte. Die Stadt wird sich etwa 50 Jahre später mit Mauern umgeben und offiziel Wijk bij Duurstede heißen. Im Volksmund blieb es Wijk. Dass Dorf Wijk wird schon im Jahre 948 genannt. Damals sagte man schon das es früher Dorestad hieß.

Die größte Hafenstadt zwischen (Kromme) Rijn und Lek.
